MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY COMES UP SHORT AGAINST TOP-RANKED SHIPPENSBURG
EAST STROUDSBURG -- The Mansfield University field hockey team gave top-ranked and unbeaten Shippensburg every thing they could handle, but the Mountaineers came up short 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

Shippensburg (11-0), who are coming off a win over number two ranked Bloomsburg, started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute by Ashley Watt.

The Mountaineers responded with less than three minutes to go in the first half. Shana Markwis’ goal on a penalty corner deflected off of a defender and sailed over the goaltender’s head and into the net.

Shippensburg sealed the game as Danielle Haas scored off a penalty corner in the 63rd minute.

Defensively, the Mountaineers kept the score close, despite Shippensburg’s 22-5 shot advantage and 18-7 advantage on corner kicks. Watt had 9 of those shots while Natalie Grazan had 4. Mansfield’s goaltender Brianna DeLuca recorded 8 saves on the afternoon.

Mansfield falls to 3-8 on the season and 2-4 in the PSAC.
