FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIE FIELD HOCKEY RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 5-4 SETBACK TO BRYANT – SHANA MARKWIS SCORES TWICE

MANSFIELD – A furious rally by the Mansfield University Mountaineers came up just short in a 5-4 setback to Bryant College in field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Spaulding Field.

Bryant’s Caroline Carr scored all five of her teams goals while Shana Markwis (Milford/Delaware Valley) scored twice for Mansfield.

Bryant would draw first blood with Caroline Carr scoring the first of her five goals midway into the first half. The Mountaineers tied the score two minutes later when Shana Markwis scored her first collegiate goal off a corner at the 21:29 mark.

Carr would add two more goals before the first of the first half to give Bryant a 3-1 advantage at intermission.  Mansfield Ryanne Higgins (Newton/Council Rock) scored an unassisted goal seven minutes into the second half to cut the score to 3-2, but Carr added two more goals over a ten minute span to give Bryant a 5-2 advantage with 15 minutes to play.

Markwis scored her second goal of the game, this one off an assist from Higgins and sophomore Keely Jarrett (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) would add an unassisted goal with 10 minutes to play, but the Mountaineers could draw no closer.

The Mountaineers held a 33-29 advantage in shots and 10-6 in corners with Katie Heil (Strasburg/Lampeter-Strasburg) and Brianna DeLuca (West Grove/Avon Grove) combining for 16 saves. Marie Grant had 19 saves for Bryant.

The Mountaineers fall to 0-2 on the season and will host C.W. Post on Tuesday. Bryant goes to 1-1.
