RELEASE DATE: 2/29/04 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES IMPROVE TO 4-1 WITH WINS OVER WEST LIBERTY AND FAIRMONT STATE – CRONIN THROWS COMPLETE GAME IN OPENER – HOSHAUER HITS TWO HOME RUNS FAIRMONT, WV – Senior John Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) threw a complete game in the opener and junior D.J. Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg) blasted two home runs in the nightcap as Mansfield posted a 5-1 win over West Liberty State (WV) and 14-6 victory over Fairmont State (WV) Sunday. “That’s a pretty good start to the season,” said head coach Harry Hillson about his 4-1 Mountaineers. “John Cronin was almost in mid-season form today and threw a complete game. He and the rest of our pitchers also got a lot of help from the hitters.” Cronin scattered seven hits while striking out seven and issuing just two walks to pick up his first win of the season. Mansfield trailed 1-0 before erupting for four runs in the sixth and adding an insurance run in the seventh. Freshman David Meldrum went 2-3 with a double and two rbi’s with Brandon Brokaw going 2-4 with two doubles. Josh Rearick also had two hits and drove in a run. The Mountaineers rapped out 12 hits in the win over Fairmont State. Mansfield held a 7-4 lead before exploding with four runs in the fifth inning keyed by Hoshauer’s towering two-run home run. Hoshauer added another two run home run in the seventh. Both cleared the 400 foot mark of the fences. GAME ONE
