IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES GREG MARTIN SIGNS WITH MONTREAL EXPOS – REPORTS
FOR ASSIGNMENT TODAY IN FLORIDA
MANSFIELD
– Mansfield University senior pitching standout Greg Martin
(Moscow/Western Wayne) has signed a contract to pitch for the Montreal
Expos.
Martin reports to Jupiter, FL today for assignment.
Martin, who becomes the 34th Mountaineer player to be selected by a
Major League team since 1969, was one of the top pitchers in NCAA Division
II this season.
Martin was
named to 3rd Team All-American honors after setting a school and PSAC
record by winning his first 13 starts of the season. The senior lefty posted a
13-2 overall record with a 2.63 ERA. In 106.0 innings worked, Martin struck out
96 batters while walking just 37. He set new school records for wins, complete
games (12), innings pitched and strikeouts. In addition, Martin finished second
in NCAA Division II in wins and 34th in ERA.
Over the span of his four-year career at Mansfield, Martin finished second in
career wins (29) and strikeouts (256), third in innings pitched (275) and
complete games (17). All the above marks set new school records for a
left-handed pitcher.
Martin will probably be assigned to Gulf Coast Expos in the Florida Gulf Coast
League or the Vermont Expos of the New York-Penn League. Vermont plays a three
game series at Bowman Field against the Williamsport Crosscutters July 4, 5, and
6.
