FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES USE LONG BALL TO SWEEP MILLERSVILLE 3-2, 17-5 – BRETT BROWN HITS WALKOFF HOMER IN OPENER – DOUG EVANS BELTS GRAND SLAM IN NIGHTCAP

MANSFIELD – Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) belted a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in the opener and Doug Evans (Mansfield/Elmira Notre Dame) blasted a grand slam in the nightcap to lead Mansfield University to a 3-2, 17-5 sweep over Millersville in a PSAC East doubleheader at Shaute Field Monday afternoon.

In the opener, Mansfield’s Jeff Papi (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) and Millersville’s Brandon Klinger were locked into a pitchers dual in the opener. Papi held Millersville hitless until the top of the fifth inning when Millersville scored twice on four hits.

Mansfield came right back in the bottom half of the inning when Craig Barkey (New Eagle/Ringgold) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored when Josh Rearick (Elton/Forest Hills) doubled. Rearick would later score on a single by Brett Brown to tie the score.

With the score still tied at 2-2 and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Brett Brown took the first pitch he saw deep over the left field fence for the game winning home run.

Papi improved his record to 5-3 overall with the complete game victory. He scattered five hits while striking out five and walking one. Brown was two-for-three with a home run and two RBI while Rearick was two-for-four with an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning only to have Millersville the score in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the second, the Mountaineers would erupt for six runs on six hits including a grand slam by Doug Evans deep over the centerfield fence.

Millersville closed the gap to 8-5 before the Mountaineers put the game away for good with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads) blasted two solo home runs and D.J. Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg) went five-for-five with two doubles and three RBI. Jason Fischer was two-for-three with four RBI and the Mountaineers rapped out a season high 19 hits in the game.

John Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) started and went 3.2 innings before being relieved by Marty Rakaczjewski (Wilkes-Barre/Hanover Area) who picked up the win by allowing just two hits and no runs over the final 3.1 innings.

The Mountaineers have now won their last four games and improved to 23-16 overall and move into a third place tie in the PSAC East with a 10-8 conference record.
