FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTAINEERS SWEEP DOUBLE HEADER TO END THE WEEKEND 2-1  -CRONIN GOES THE DISTANCE IN GAME TWO

  Front Royal, VA-The mountaineers take two games from Shepherd College in today’s double-header. 

  GAME ONE: The mountaineers were able to put up nine runs to pull out a one run win in the first of two games. 

  On the mound for the Mounties Dan Yoder (Montoursville/Montoursville) recorded his third win of the season.  Yoder gave way to Marty Rakacazewski (Wilkes Barre/Hanover Area) in the sixth inning, who came on to get the save.  Rakacazewski sealed the victory for the mountaineers in the seventh when he got a ground ball to Travis Wurster (Montoursville/Montoursville) with runners on first and third. Wurster flipped to Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport), covering second, for the out and Shepherd ended the game with a runner on third.

  From the plate Doug Evans (Mansfield/Notre Dame) led the charge going 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s.  Brett Brown (Bellfonte/Bellfonte) also added a double and 2 RBI’s, Jason Manwaring (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) had 1 RBI on the day for the Mounties.  Catcher Craig Barkey had the lone homerun of the game with a solo shot. 

  Mansfield improves their record to 9-7 overall with this win.

  GAME TWO:  John Cronin (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) dominated from the mound, going the distance and striking out 8. 

  Cronin would finish the game allowing only 4 hits to record his second win of the year, moving his record to 2-1.  Behind the plate for Cronin was D.J. Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg Area) who went 2-3 in the game for the Mounties.

  Leading the way from plate was Brett Brown (Bellfonte/Bellfonte) and Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport) who both had homeruns in the game.  Brown, 2-5 on the day, put the first runs on the board for MU with his 2 run shot in the first.  Not to be out done Fischer, who went 2-4 in the game, added his 3 run blast in the sixth.  Junior Brandon Brokaw (Altoona/Altoona) also recorded one RBI in the game.

  With the win Mansfield improves their record to 10-7 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday the 19th of March when they face SUNY-Cortland at home.  The game is scheduled to start at 3pm and will be at Shaute Field.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES FALL TO SHEPHERD COLLEGE 9-2

FORT ROYAL, VA – The mountaineers suffer a rough fielding day as they commit 5 errors and suffer a loss to Shepherd College.

  The mountaineers were able to put up one run in the third inning and one in the ninth, but this proved to not be enough as they allowed 6 unearned runs. 

  Senior Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport) led the way for the Mounties at the plate going 2 for 4. 

  Jeff Papi (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) started the game for the mountaineers before being relieved by Zach Weaver (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) in the seventh.  Justin Ferguson (Danville/Danville) came on in the eighth to finish out the game.

  The mountaineers move to 8-7 on the season and, will be back in action tomorrow with a double header against Shepherd starting at 1pm.

  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIE BASEBALL DOUBLE HEADER WITH SHEPHERD CHANGED

  FRONT ROYAL, VA- The Mansfield University Mountaineers were slated to take on Shepherd College for 2 games on Saturday March 15, and another 2 on Sunday March 16 at Shepherd College (WV).

  The location of these games has been changed to Front Royal, Virginia at Bing Crosby Stadium.  There will only be 1 game played on Saturday now and it’s scheduled for 4 pm.  Sunday’s schedule will remain at 1pm for game 1, and 3:30 pm for game two.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  MOUNTIES DOWN SIXTH RANKED ASHLAND 13-9 – GO 8-6 ON FLORIDA TRIP

FT. MYERS, FL – The Mansfield University Mountaineers erupted for 10 runs in the first inning on their way to beating sixth ranked Ashland (OH) University 13-9 in NCAA Division II baseball action in Ft. Myers, FL Sunday afternoon.

Mansfield sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first to score all the runs they would need.

Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads), who led the nation in home runs last season, hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. Manwaring went 3-5 with a double, home run and three RBI. Doug Evans (Mansfield/Elmira Notre Dame) also went 3-5 with two RBI with Josh Rearick (Elton/Forest Hills) collecting two hits in three at-bats as Mansfield pounded out a season high 15 hits in the game.

John Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) started on the mound before being relieved by Marty Rakacazewski in the third inning. Dan Yoder (Williamsport/Williamsport) came in the seventh and retired the side in order to preserve the win.

Mansfield ends its Florida trip with an 8-6 record. The Mountaineers will travel to Shepard (WV) College this weekend.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES POUND OUT 15 HITS IN 15-7 WIN OVER WEST LIBERTY  – JASON FISCHER BELTS GRAND SLAM

FT. MYERS, FL – Jeff Papi (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) went the distance and Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport) blasted a grand slam to lead Mansfield University to a 15-7 win over West Liberty (WV) in NCAA Division II baseball action Saturday night at Ft. Myers, Fl.

Papi survived a shaky first inning to improve to 3-0 on the season. After allowing six runs on six hits in the first, Papi settled down to give up just three more hits over the next six innings. He struck out two with no walks.

Mansfield chipped away at the early lead, scoring two runs in the second inning on a towering two run home run by Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) and added one in the third before taking the lead with a five run fourth inning 

Fischer put the game away with a grand slam in the top of the sixth.

Fischer went 3-4 with a double, home run and five RBI while Brown was 3-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Mansfield improves to 7-5 overall. The second game of the doubleheader had a late Saturday night start.

FT. MYERS, FL – West Liberty scored five unearned runs on five Mountaineers to salvage a split with Mansfield University in a 6-2 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Ft. Myers, FL Saturday night.

Matt Allegretto went  5 1/3 innings allowing just one earned run while striking out six. Doug Evans and Matt Mills doubled for Mansfield with Jason Fischer driving in both of Mansfield’s runs with a single in the second inning.

Mansfield falls to 7-6 overall and will play sixth ranked Ashland University tomorrow morning before flying back to Mansfield.

FT. MYERS, FL – Despite another strong pitching performance by Dan Yoder (Williamsport/Williamsport) the Mansfield University baseball team suffered a 6-0 setback to fifth ranked Ashland University Friday in Ft. Myers, FL.

Mansfield managed just four hits in the game and stranded eight runners in falling to 6-5 on the season.

Yoder went six strong innings allowing just one earned run on seven hits and three strikeouts. Ashland broke up a tight game with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Mansfield will play a doubleheader Saturday against West Liberty (WV) State before a rematch with Ashland on Sunday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES SWEEP IN FLORIDA – CRONIN GOES THE DISTANCE IN 9-6 WIN OVER NORTHWESTERN – YODER GET SECOND WIN OF SEASON IN GAME TWO

FT. MYERS, FL – John Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) went the distance to pick up his first win of the season in a 9-6 victory over Northwestern (IA) and Dan Yoder (Montoursville/Williamsport) earned his second win of the season in a 2-1 decision over Dakota State at Ft. Myers, FL Wednesday afternoon.

Cronin struck out eight and walked just one of seven innings in the opener to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Mountaineers erupted for five runs in the first inning and added one more in the second and two in the third before Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport) blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning. Fischer was 3-3 with two RBI.

In the nightcap, Yoder came in relief of starter Marty Rakazawski in the top of the fourth inning with the score tied at 1-1. He allowed just one hit over the next four innings while striking out seven and walking one to earn his second win of the season.

Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and gave way to pinch runner Brett Shockloss (Williamsport/Williamsport) who stole second. Shockless then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Kochenderfer (Lewistown/Lewistown). After an intentional walk to Doug Evans (Mansfield/Notre Dame), Aaron Kilgo (Honesdale/Honesdale) singled in the winning run.

The Mountaineers improve to 6-4 overall and have a much-deserved day off on Thursday before facing #6 ranked Ashland (OH) University on Friday.

FT. MYERS, FL --Brett Brown blasted a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead Mansfield to a 7-4 win over South Dakota State at Ft. Myers, FL Tuesday afternoon.

Jeff Papi picked up his second win of the season going six innings and striking  out six before John Cronin came in in the seventh. 

Josh Rearick went 3-3 for the Mountaineers.

Mansfield improves to 4-4 on the season.

MYERS, FL – Matt Allegretto (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) picked up a win in his first collegiate start and Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads)  had an RBI single to lead Mansfield to a 4-1 over Concordia (MN) College in the first game of a doubleheader at Ft. Myers, FL Monday afternoon. The Mountaineers dropped the nightcap, 15-2.

Allegretto scattered six hits and struck out six over six innings before giving way to Marty Rakazawski (Wilkes-Barre/Hanover) in the seventh.  Doug Evans (Mansfield/Elmira Notre Dame) doubled in the second inning and later scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead.

Mansfield scored two insurance runs in the sixth inning when Josh Rearick led off with a single, stole second and later scored on a single by Jason Manwaring.

The Mountaineers committed eight errors while managing just three hits in the nightcap.

Mansfield is now 3-4 overall and plays South Dakota State on Tuesday.

FT. MYERS, FL – Freshman Dan Yoder (Williamsport/Williamsport) went the distance in his first collegiate game to lead Mansfield University to a 3-2 win over Salem International in college baseball at Ft. Myers, FL on Sunday. Mansfield lost their second game of the day,17-4, to Missouri-St. Louis.

Yoder scattered eight hits and struck out five in his collegiate debut for the Mountaineers. Josh Rearick (Elton/Forest Hills) went 2-3 including what proved to be the game winning two run single in the second inning.

Mansfield had 13 hits to Missouri-St. Louis’s 14 in game two, but the Mountaineers committed four errors. Matt Hribal (West Chester/Henderson) went 3-3 with two double and DJ Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg) was 2-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead Mansfield. Matt Hills (Clifton,VA/Centerville) and Dan Kochenderfer (Lewistown/Lewistown) were both 2-3.

The Mountaineers are now 2-3 overall and will play Concordia (MN) in a doubleheader on Monday.

FT. MYERS, FL – After winning their season opener just 13 hours earlier, the Mansfield University bats went asleep in dropping a 4-0 and 3-1 decision to Point Park and Missouri-St. Louis Saturday at Ft. Myers, FL.

Mansfield managed just four hits against Point Park with Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) collecting two singles in three trips to the plate. Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads) and Josh Rearick each had a hit.

Junior Marty Rakacazewski went the distance on the mound, scattering six hits and striking out six.

Mansfield managed just five hits in a 3-1 setback to Missouri-St. Louis. Manwaring went 2-3 with Chris Barkey, Brian Brokaw and Josh Rearick each having one.

John Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) went the distance for the Mountaineers on the mound, giving up eight hits with two strikeouts.

Mansfield falls to 1-2 overall and will play Salem International (WV) and Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANFIELD UNIVERSITY SEASON OPENING BASEBALL TRIP TO VIRGINIA CANCELLED – MOUNTIES TO OPEN SEASON NEXT FRIDAY IN FLORIDA  

MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University baseball team’s season opening trip to Virginia has been cancelled because the fields at both Ferrum College and Lynchburg College are both covered by snow.

“As of noon today, both coaches reported they still had a couple of inches of snow and ice on their fields,” head coach Harry Hillson reported. “Our schedule does not have room to make the games up, so we will open the season in snow free Ft. Myers.”

The Mountaineers are currently ranked 29th in the country in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA II Baseball Poll.

Mansfield will open the season at Ft. Myers, FL on Friday Feb. 28 when they take on Missouri-St. Louis at 7 p.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES RANKED 29TH IN LATEST NCAA DIVISION II BASEBALL POLL – SCHEDULED TO OPEN 136TH SEASON IN VIRGINIA THIS WEEKEND

MANSFIELD – They may not have played a game yet this season, but the Mansfield University baseball team has been on the minds of the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Poll Committee for the past three weeks.

The Mountaineers are ranked 29th in the nation in this week’s College Baseball/ABCA Poll and have been in the poll since being ranked in the preseason poll three weeks ago.

Kennesaw State (GA) is ranked first in the nation, followed by Tampa, Abilene Christian and Florida Southern.

Mansfield is scheduled to open its 136th baseball season this weekend in Virginia when they travel to Ferrum College for single game on Friday and Lynchburg College for a doubleheader on Saturday.

Harry Hillson enters his 17th season as the head coach of the Mountaineers where he has posted a 531-274-1 mark after going 41-14 and making the NCAA Division II Playoffs last season.

The Mountaineers return seven position starters from last season including All-American Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads) and preseason All-American Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte). Manwaring led the nation with 23 home runs and 79 RBI while Brown finished second in the PSAC with 13 home runs and 59 RBI.

Other returning starters include senior Doug Evans (Mansfield/Elmira Notre Dame) who batted .289 with nine home runs and 37 RBI; senior Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport, .304,  two home runs, 25 RBI); senior Craig Barkey (New Eagle/Riggold, .333, two home runs,  29 RBI);  senior Aaron Kilgo (Honesdale/Honesdale, .348, four home runs, 19 RBI), and sophomore Travis Wurster (Montoursville/Montoursville, .278, one home run , 24 RBI).

Juniors John Cronin (Horseheads/Horseheads) and Jeff Papi (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) lead the pitching staff.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD’S JASON MANWARING AND BRETT BROWN NAMED NCAA DIVISION II PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN

MANSFIELD – Mansfield University senior standouts Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads) and Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) have been named 2003 NCAA Division II Preseason All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball. The NCAA Division II Preseason All-American Team was released today at the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) national convention in San Diego.

Manwaring, a designated hitter, led NCAA Division II in home runs last season with a school and PSAC record 23 round trippers. In addition, he was second in the nation with 79 RBI’s. In 178 at-bats last season, Manwaring rapped out 69 hits for a .388 batting averaging.  His .865 slugging percentage was third best in NCAA Division II.

A first team ABCA All-American last season, Manwaring was the North Atlantic Regional Player of the Year as well as first team All North Atlantic Region, All-PSAC East and All-ECAC selections.

Brown, a first baseman, was second in the PSAC in home runs (13) and RBI’s (59) and led the conference in runs scored (63).  A starter in all 55 games last season, Brown batted .319 with 60 hits in 188 at-bats. He earned All-PSAC and All-North Atlantic Regional honors last season.

Mansfield, which finished 41-14 last season, is ranked 30th in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball preseason poll. The Mountaineers return seven position starters this year and open the 2003 season at Ferrum College on Feb. 21.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES RANKED IN TOP 30 OF NCAA DIVISION II PRESEASON BASEBALL POLL – MARKS 11TH STRAIGHT SEASON MANSFIELD HAS APPEARED IN NATIONAL DIVISION II POLL

MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University baseball team is ranked #30 in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA NCAA Division II Poll.

It marks the 11th straight season the Mountaineers have appeared in the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA NCAA Division II Poll. 253 schools compete at the NCAA Division II level

Mansfield captured the PSAC East crown last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament before finishing with a 41-14 record.

It marked the third time the Mountaineers have won 40 or more games.

Mansfield returns seven position starters from last season’s team including first team All-American Jason Manwaring who led the nation with 23 home runs last season.

The Mountaineers open the 2003 season when they travel to Ferrum (VA) College on Feb. 21.
