FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES ELIMINATED FROM NCAA DIVISION II NORTH ATLANTIC
REGIONAL WITH 3-2 SETBACK TO KUTZTOWN AND 11-5 LOSS TO SHEPHERD – 41-14 MARK
SECOND BEST IN SCHOOL HISTORY
KUTZTOWN – One of the most successful seasons in school
history drew to a heartbreaking close as the Mansfield University Mountaineers
were eliminated from the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional Tournament
with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Kutztown in the winner’s bracket before
suffering a season ending 11-5 setback to Shepherd College.
“You
come this far, you win 41 games and it’s still hurts to lose,” head coach Harry
Hillson said. “Baseball is a game of opportunities and we just
couldn’t take advantage of the opportunities we had in the first game. We
still have one of the best records in baseball and even though we are all
disappointed, I’m proud of what our guys achieved.”
The
opener was truly a classic baseball game. Kutztown scored a solo run in the
second inning and it stood up until the Mountaineers tied with a run in the
bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Jason Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads)
driving in Travis Wurster (Montoursville/Montoursville).
Kutztown
retook the lead with a run in the top of the eighth and added another in the top
of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Chris Hafich (Aston/Bishop
Shanahan) led off with a double to center field that just missed being a
home run. After an out, Kutztown replaced starter Paul Garber with Bob McCuen.
McCuen faced Manwaring who doubled to right to score
Hafich, closing the gap to 3-2. But McCuen got the final two outs, one on a line
shot by the third basemen by Eddie Frame, to end the game.
The
Mountaineer out hit the Golden Bears 11-8, but stranded 13 runners on base and
twice failed to score with the bases loaded. Greg Martin (Moscow/Western
Wayne) took the loss to end his record setting season with a 13-2 mark.
Martin threw an exceptional game, scattering eight hits and striking out nine.
Manwaring was 3-4 with two RBI while Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte)
and Jason Fischer (Williamsport/Williamsport) each had two hits.
In
the nightcap, Shepherd scored eight runs in the final three innings to earn a
spot in the championship round against Kutztown on Saturday.
Mansfield
pounded out 14 hits, but again stranded 13 base runners in the loss. Chris
Hafich was 3-5 with a home run and two doubles with Travis Wurster, Brett Brown,
Doug Evans (Mansfield/Elmira Notre Dame) and Jason Fischer each
had two hits.
John
Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) took the loss going 6.2 innings.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES RALLY WITH FOUR RUNS IN
THE TOP OF THE 10TH INNING TO DOWN WEST VIRGINIA STATE 8-4 IN OPENING
GAME ON NCAA DIVISION II NORTH ATLANTIC REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University Mountaineers scored
four runs in the top of the 10th inning to pull out an 8-4 win over
West Virginia State in the opening game of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic
Regional at Kutztown University’s North Campus Field Thursday afternoon.
With one out in the top of the 10th inning, Jason
Manwaring (Elmira,NY/Horseheads) singled to right center and was then
replaced by pinch runner John Stanek. Eddie Frame (Linden/Williamsport)
followed with a single to center to move Stanek to third.
West Virginia State then replaced starting pitcher Scott
Patterson with Neal Defazio. Brandon Brokaw, who had replaced
starting right fielder Doug Evans an inning earlier, drilled a single through
the middle scoring Stanek and breaking a 4-4 deadlock.
Josh Rearick, who had been a defensive
replacement an inning earlier, followed with a single to left center driving in
Frame and Brokaw. One out later, catcher Craig Barkey would drive
in the final run of the inning giving Mountaineer starter Mike Ruth
a four run cushion.
Ruth improved to 9-4, scattering 12 hits over 10 innings
while striking out four.
“This is what people mean when they talk about a team
effort,” head coach Harry Hillson said. “Our big hitters kept
us in the game, but it was the guys off the bench that stepped up and won the
game when the opportunity presented itself. Mike Ruth really came up big for us
on the mound and just seemed to get stronger as the game went on. He was
throwing harder in the ninth and tenth innings than he was in the first and
second.”
The Mountaineers trailed 2-0 before erupting for four runs
in the top of the fourth inning of four straight hits.
Brett Brown led off the inning with a single
to right and moved to second on a single by Manwaring. Eddie Frame then singled
to center to score Brown before Doug Evans (Mansfield/Elmira
Notre Dame) drilled a double down the left field line to score Manwaring
and Frame. Evans later scored on a fielder’s choice.
West Virginia added a run in the bottom of the fourth and
tied the game at 4-4 with a solo run in the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the ninth, Jason Fischer
(Williamsport/Williamsport) walked and advanced to third with two outs
but Chris Hafich deep fly was caught at the wall to end the threat.
West Virginia State mounded a threat of their own in the
bottom of the ninth, advancing a runner to third base with two outs before Ruth
got the final batter to fly out to center.
Hafich, Manwaring and Frame, the 2,4,5 hitters in the
Mountaineers lineup each had two hits to lead Mansfield 13-hit attack.
Mansfield now moves on to the winner’s bracket where they will face Kutztown, a 4-2 winner over Shepherd College, at 1 p.m. The two teams have split four games played during the regular season.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES WIN PSAC EAST CROWN IN
SPLIT WITH KUTZTOWN – MANWARING SET NEW HOME RUN RECORD WITH GRAND SLAM IN
NIGHTCAP – DOUG EVANS HITS TWO HOME RUNS IN ONE INNING
MANSFIELD
– Jason Manwaring (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads) blasted his school
record 21st home run of the season with a grand slam and Doug
Evans (Mansfield/Elmira Notre Dame) hit two home runs in the same inning
to lead Mansfield University to the 2002 PSAC East crown with a 10-6 win over
Kutztown University in the second game of a doubleheader at Shaute Field
Saturday afternoon. Kutztown won the opener 6-4.
“Winning
the PSAC East was the first goal this team set for itself before the season
began,” said head coach Harry Hillson. “These two games had
that playoff atmosphere and our guys really come through when they needed to.
It’s always a big accomplish to win this division, but we still have a long
way to go to get to where we want to be and the next step is the PSAC
Championships starting Thursday.”
In
the nightcap, the Mountaineers were held hitless until Doug Evans led off the
bottom of the fifth inning with a home run to break a scoreless tie. Aaron
Kilgo (Honesdale/Honesdale) then doubled before Craig Barkey (New
Eagle/Ringgold) delivered an RBI single. Chris Hafich
(Aston/Bishop Shanahan) and Brett Brown (Bellefonte/Bellefonte)
reached to load the bases for Manwaring who hit a 0-2 pitch over the right
centerfield wall to break the Mansfield and PSAC record of 20 home runs in a
season set by John Michael Cook (Elmira,NY/EFA) in 1995 and Scot Wilcox in 1998.
“I
was just looking to put the ball in play with a 0-2 count and bases loaded,”
Manwaring said. “He threw an outside fastball and I just tried to go with the
pitch and it went over the fence. But the biggest thing about it is -- it helped
win the game. No matter how many you hit, the only ones that really count are
the ones that help win a game.”
Eddie
Frame (Williamsport/Williamsport) followed Manwaring’s shot with a solo home run to
centerfield and then Evans followed Frame with his second home run of the inning
to give the Mountaineers an 8-0 lead.
Mansfield
added two more in the sixth with starter John Cronin (Horseheads,NY/Horseheads)
taking a 10-0 lead into the top of the seventh. But Kutztown would not go down
easily, reaching a tiring Cronin for six runs including a grand slam home run by
Dave Rode before Alan Peterman recorded the final two outs.
In
the opener the Mountaineers staked Kutztown to a 5-0 lead before Manwaring hit a
two run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kutztown scored once in the
top of the seventh before the Mountaineers staged a two out rally with a two run
single by Brett Brown and had Manwaring at the plate with a runner on before he
ground out to end the game.
In
addition to setting a new home run record, Manwaring also became the first
player in the Mountaineers 135-year baseball history to hit the 70 RBI mark.
The
win sets a new school record for wins in the regular season as the Mountaineers
close out with a 39-10 mark. It also marks the eighth time in Harry Hillson’s
16 years as head coach the Mountaineers have won the PSAC East crown.
Mansfield
will play Lock Haven, which swept Slippery Rock on Saturday to finish second in
the PSAC West, in the opening round of the PSAC Championship Tournament at 7
p.m. in Boyertown this Thursday. California, the PSAC West Champ, takes on
Kutztown at 1 p.m.
