FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Chris Zelko throws complete game win in opener as Mounties split with No. 10 West Chester
MANSFIELD Chris Zelko threw a complete game and Mike Hartz drove in the winning run with a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth to lift Mansfield to a 5-4 win over No. 10 ranked and PSAC East leading West Chester in the first game of a doubleheader at Shaute Field Friday afternoon.
West Chester won the second game 30-6.
In the opener Zelko and West Chesters Eric Carmichael were locked in a tight pitching with Mansfield holding a 2-1 lead after four innings off run scoring sac fly by Kevin Miller in the first and a RBI single by Seth Tressler in the third.
West Chester took a 4-0 in the top of the fifth on a three-run home run by Wendle but Mansfield got two runs in the bottom of the inning on a error and RBI single from Chris Coleman to tie the game at 4-4.
In the sixth, Matt Hamilton drew a two-out walk and stole second before Hartz doubled to left center field to drive in what proved to be the winning run.
In the seventh Zelko got the first batter to ground out before Wendle singled. Zelko then struck out Charlie Kelly and catcher Glen Jenkins made a perfect throw to second to nail Wendle, who attempted to steal second, to end the game.
Zelko improved to 3-1 on the season striking out three while walking none. Hamilton went 2-3 from the plate and scored three runs including the game winner.
In the nightcap, West Chester broke open a 1-1 tie scoring seven runs in the third inning off six straight hits including a grand slam by Bob Stumpo. West Chester pounded out 29 hits off six Mountaineer pitchers.
Ernie Ruch went 2-2 with a double and two RBI to lead the Mansfield offense.
