SHIPPENSBURG – Glen Jenkins belted what proved to be a game-winning two-run home run in the opener and Justin Garcia threw a complete-game four hitter to lead Mansfield to a 5-3, 2-1 sweep over Shippensburg in a PSAC East doubleheader at Grove Field Friday afternoon.

In the opener, Shippensburg scored in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Kris Kullman but Mansfield tied the game with a run in the top of the third when Kevin Miller singled and stole second then scored on a single by Chris Coleman.

Shippensburg retook the lead in the bottom of the third on an unearned run before Mansfield scored twice in the top of the fifth off a run scoring single by Mike Hartz and RBI field choice by Coleman. Shippensburg tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the bottom half of the fifth setting up Jenkins heroics in the top of the sixth.

With one out in the top of the sixth, freshman Dylan Woodworth singled and was followed by Jenkins who hit his first home run of the season down the left field line giving Mansfield a 5-3 lead.

Bernard Johnson came in relief of starter Chris Zelko in the bottom of the sixth and retired all six batters he faced over the next two innings to preserve the win and earn his second save of the season. Zelko had a strong outing scattering seven hits over five innings and striking out six with just one walk.  Miller went 2-2 while Coleman and Woodworth each went 2-4 for Mansfield.

In the nightcap, Mansfield got a run in the second when Seth Tressler hit a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second when Woodworth was hit by a pitch. Jenkins then loaded the bases when the centerfielder committed an error and Jon Taddeo plated Tressler on a fielder’s choice.

Mansfield got what proved to be the winning run in the fourth when Woodworth led off with a double to left center and moved to third on a sac bunt by Jenkins. Taddeo then delivered a sac fly to center to score Woodworth.

Shippensburg closed the gap to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a suicide squeeze by Kevin Scholly and Shippensburg had runners at first and third before Garcia got the final batter of the inning to pop up to second.

Shippensburg had a runner at second with one out in the sixth before Garcia retired the final two batters of the inning. In the seventh Shippensburg’s A.J. Czap drew a one-out walk but Garcia got the next batter to fly out to left. The final batter stuck out swinging to pick up his second win and third complete game of the season.

Taddeo drove in both runs for Mansfield and Woodworth doubled for the only extra-base hit of the game. Garcia posted one of his best performances in his three-year career at Mansfield. The senior right hander scattered four hits and struck out three in the complete game win.

The sweep moves Mansfield into a tie for third place in the PSAC East with Millersville after Millersville dropped a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg on Friday. Mansfield improved to 24-14 overall.

Mansfield will host Shippensburg in a doubleheader at Shaute Field on Saturday in a Senior Day celebration with senior Chris Coleman, Justin Garcia, Matt Hamilton, Bernard Johnson, Shane Ryan, Zach Ullrich and Joe Will being honored before the first game.
