RELEASE DATE: 4/26/10 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield’s Bernard Johnson named PSAC East Pitcher of the Week MANSFIELD – Mansfield University standout Bernard Johnson (Corning,NY/Corning East) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding performance during the week ending 4/25/10. Johnson was a key performer in Mansfield’s 6-2 week, helping the Mountaineers clinch the No. 3 seed from the PSAC East. The senior right-hander appeared in three of Mansfield’s eight games during the week earning a win and save. In 6.0 innings worked – all of them in relief – Johnson allowed just one hit and no earned runs while striking out two. Opponents batted just .059 against him picking up just one single over the three games. Johnson earned a win, his team-best sixth on the season, at Lock Haven allowing one hit over the last three innings of the game. He went two perfect innings in an 11-3 win over East Stroudsburg on Friday at Mansfield striking out two but saved his best until last. Mansfield, which need one win over East Stroudsburg in the final day of the regular season to clinch the No. 3 seed from the PSAC East, rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Johnson entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order to preserve the win and clinch the No. 3 seed from the East. For the season, Johnson has appeared in 16 games with a 6-2 record and team-best 3.18 ERA. He has struck out 22 hitters over 28.1 innings pitched. Johnson also has a team-best four saves on the season. Mansfield opens the PSAC Playoffs in Johnstown this Wednesday when the Mountaineers meet California (PA) at 9:30 a.m. ###
