FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Miller brothers power Mansfield past Shippensburg to earn doubleheader split

SHIPPENSBURG –  The Miller brothers, Chris and Kevin, each hit a home run and combined to drive in six runs to propel Mansfield to a 9-7 win over Shippensburg in the second game of a PSAC East doubleheader Friday afternoon.

Shippensburg won the opener 12-5.

In the nightcap, Mansfield staked starting pitcher Chris Zelko to a 3-0 lead in the first inning keyed by Chris Miller’s two-run home run over the right field fence. Mansfield added three more runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Matt Young and run scoring double but Chris Miller to take a 6-0 lead.

But Shippensburg would tie the score with six runs of their in the bottom of the inning, four of them scoring on a grand slam by Kasey Kuhns.

Mansfield retook the lead with a run in the fifth and scored twice more in the sixth on Kevin Miller’s two run home run over the center field fence.

Shippensburg scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull l to 9-7 before Tyler Noel came in relief of C Zelko and retired six of the seven batters he faced on the final two innings to earn the save. Noel threw strikes on 18 of his 23 pitches.  Chris Miller went 2-4 with a double, home run and four RBI while younger brother Kevin was 2-4 with a home run and two RBI. Matt Young was also 2-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Zelko was credited with the win to improve to 4-3 on the season.

In the opener,  Mansfield scored once in the top of the first on a RBI single by Mike Hartz before Shippensburg tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second.

Shippensburg got three more, two of them off a two-run double by Cody Kulp to chase Mansfield starter Justin Garcia off the mound.

Shippensburg added five more runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Mansfield scored a run in the fifth on Bair’s solo home run to right field and got three more runs in the sixth keyed by a two-run single from Brian Danner.

The two teams will face each other again Saturday in a doubleheader at Shuate Field.
