RELEASE DATE: 4/09/08 FOR IMMEDIATE: Mountaineers rally to salvage split at doubleheader at Slippery Rock
Game One Box Score SLIPPERY ROCK – Chris Coleman drove in Chris Miller with a single to left center field in the top of the eighth inning to propel Mansfield to a wild 9-8 win over Slippery Rock Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers scored the first run of the game when Matt Young walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Ryan Giblin and scored on an Abe Yeakel groundout. The lead was short lived as Slippery Rock got four runs in the bottom of the first and a run in the second. The Mountaineers began their comeback in the third when Young walked again and advanced to second on a single by Giblin. Justin Garcia followed with a single scoring Young and Giblin was able to score on an error by the right fielder to bring Mansfield back within two at 5-3. Mansfield continued their momentum into the fourth when Drew Bair made it to second on an error by the third baseman. Bair scored on a single up the middle by Justin Baer to put Mansfield within one. Giblin reached base on a bunt single and was followed by Yeakel who drove a base hit to the right side scoring Baer and moving Giblin to third. Garcia followed with a double to left field scoring Giblin and Yeakel and giving Mansfield the 7-5 lead. Slippery Rock added a run in the bottom half of the inning but Mansfield stretched the lead again in the fifth when Bair hit a one out single to center field and Baer followed with a double to put men on second and third. After Young grounded into a fielder’s choice and a walk to Giblin to load the bases, Yeakel drove a single to left field to drive in Baer and Young to make the score 9-6. In the bottom of the seventh Derek Diruscia led off with a single up the middle and was followed by Jim Eimiller who also singled advancing Direscia to second. Billy Messer followed with a single to load the bases. Mountaineer pitcher Tyer Noel struck out Rich Michalek for the second out of the inning. Scott Bender followed and reached on an error allowing Diruscia and Eimiller to score. Billy Herman followed and he reached on an error to score Messer and to tie the game at nine before the Mountaineers won the game in the eighth. Giblin, Garcia, Yeakel, Bair and Baer had two hits apiece for the Mountaineers while Young scored three runs. Irv Sleighter pitched 1 1/3 innings while not giving up a hit or run. Michalek and Messer had three hits apiece for Slippery Rock. In the opener, Mansfield scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run by Justin Garcia before Slippery Rock exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning. Mansfield did have 11 hits but Slippery Rock countered by 18 of their own. Garcia went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI while Matt Young and Chris Miller each had two hits. Mike Martin, who picked up his first collegiate win earlier in the week, suffered the loss. Mansfield improves to 24-11 on the season and travels to West Chester on Friday to take on the Golden Rams in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
