RELEASE DATE: 3/9/08 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties suffer first two losses of season in 8-6 loss to Northwood and 5-3 setback to Slippery Rock. Ft. Pierce, FL – The Mansfield University baseball team suffered its first two losses of the 2008 season with a 8-6 loss to Northwood University (MI) and 5-3 setback to PSAC West rival Slippery Rock. Both games were decided in the late innings with Northwood scored a run in each of the final two innings and Slippery Rock rallying from 3-2 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the opener, Northwood got to starter Zach Ullrich for six runs in the top of the second . Mansfield, which had scored a run in the bottom of the first, rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fourth including two on a single by Tony Battisti. Northwood got the winning run in the eighth inning off loser Rick Stewart who pitched well in relief of Ullrich. Ryan Giblin, Justin Garcia, Nate Grove and Ryan Riley each went 2-4 with Grove and Riley each hitting doubles. Against Slippery Rock, Mansfield took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh on a double by CodyStinger and single by single by Garcia. But Slippery Rock, with the help of a couple Mansfield errors, scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win. Stinger went 2-3 with a double and RBI while Chris Coleman was 2-3 and Chris Miller 2-4 with an RBI. Mansfield falls to 3-2 on the season while Slippery Rock improved to 4-2. The Mountaineers take on Manhattanville in a doubleheader Monday. GAME ONE Northwood 060 000
