 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties drop a pair of heart breakers at PSAC baseball championship- Lost 6-5 to California in opening game- Dropped 9-7 decision to West Chester in 10 innings.

BOALSBURG, PA - The Mansfield University baseball team saw its season come to an end in a pair of heartbreaking losses in the opening round of the PSAC baseball championship at Shaner Sports Complex in Boalsburg Monday. Mansfield lost it’s opening game 6-5 to California and then fell one rally short in a 9-7 loss in 10 innings to West Chester.

In the opener Mansfield took an early lead with a run in the second inning before California rallied with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third. California got two more solo runs off Kane Stein, who came into to relieve starter Nick Grove. In the top of the fifth inning the Mountaineers threatened when Brett Shockloss scored on a wild pitch making the score 5-4. Mansfield tried to rally in the top of the ninth with the first two runners getting on base but California turned a double play to end the threat.

In the losers bracket game the Mountaineers would rally three times. In the top of the ninth inning Mansfield came within one out of ending the game but West Chester scored a run with two outs to send the game into extra innings. West Chester won the game with scoring two runs in the 10th to end the Mountaineers season with a 28-18 record. D.J. Hoshauer and Dave Meldrum each went 3-5 to lead the Mansfield offense this afternoon. Erik Baker finished the day 2-8 to finish with a .500 batting average; the best in school history.
