FALLS IN EXTRA INNINGS TO
ITHACA
COLLEGE
7-6
MANSFIELD- The Mansfield University baseball team dropped a nail biter to Ithaca
College
7-6 in extra innings Wednesday
afternoon in a non-conference game at Shaute Field.
The Bombers jumped out early scoring two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0
lead, however the Mountaineers responded in their half of the inning when D.J.
Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg Area) hit a sac fly scoring Josh
Rearick (Elton/Forest Hills) cutting Ithaca’s lead to 2-1.
Ithaca
would add three more runs in
the following three innings taking a 5-1 lead going into the bottom half of the
fourth inning.
With runners on second and third, Travis
Wurster (Mountoursville/Mountoursville) drilled a double to the gap
scoring all two runners. Later in
the inning Eric Baker (Apalachin,N.Y./Owego)
launched a two-run home run tying the game at 5-5.
The Bombers would regain the lead in the following inning when Eric Maya scored
on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Crumb as Ithaca took a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning Rearick led off with a double followed by
a single by Brandon Brokaw (Altoona/Altoona) advancing Rearick to third
base. Baker then drove in Rearick on
a base hit tying the game at 6-6.
The game remained tied at 6-6 entering the top half of the eleventh inning until
Ithaca
broke the tied score when Pat
Carroll singled to centerfield scoring Eric Maya who led the inning off with a
single of his own to take a 7-6 lead.
The Mountaineers were retired in order in the bottom half of the eleventh as
Ithaca
held on for the 7-6 victory.
Mansfield
is now 16-9 overall and will
travel to
Kutztown
University
on April 3 for a PSAC East
doubleheader match up against the Golden Bears.
