FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES POUND OUT 34 HITS IN SWEEP OVER EAST STROUDSBURG – YODER THROWS THREE-HIT SHUTOUT IN NIGHTCAP

MANSFIELD – Matt Mills (Clifton,VA/Centreville) went 3-3 with a home run and four RBI’s in the opener and Dan Yoder (Williamsport/Williamsport) threw a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as Mansfield University swept East Stroudsburg 17-6 and 10-0 in the season opening PSAC East doubleheader for both teams at Shaute Field Friday afternoon.

Mansfield pounded out 34 hits on the day including 20 in the first game. Leading 3-1, the Mountaineers got six runs in the third inning keyed by a three-run home run by Mills. Mansfield added eight more runs in the fourth inning with Stu Sumner (New Columbia/Milton) delivering the big blow with a three-run home run.

Jeff Papi (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) was sharp on the mound scattering six hits with seven strikeouts over six innings to pick up his fifth win in six decisions. Eric Baker (Apalachin,NY/Owego) went 3-5 with a home run and two RBI’s with Brett Shockloss (Williamsport/Loyalsock) was 3-3. Josh Rearick (Elton/Forest City), Brandon Brokaw (Altoona/Altoona), Dan Kochenderfer (Lewistown/Lewistown), and Sumner each had two hits.

Yoder was in complete command in the second game allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking one. No runner got past second and Yoder threw just 62 pitches in the game.

Mansfield broke up a scoreless tie with DJ Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg) delivered a two-out, two-run single for all the runs the Mountaineers would need. Mills had another strong performance at the plate going 2-3 with a home run and four RBI’s. Brandon Brokaw added a home run while Dan Kochenderfer with 3-4 with a double and RBI. Hoshauer was 3-3 with two RBI’s  with Eric Baker and Travis Wurster (Montoursville/Montoursville) also had two hits each.

Mills went 5-6 with a double, two home runs and eight RBI on the day.

Mansfield improves to 14-8 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East. The two teams will meet again on Saturday in a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg.
