FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD SWEEPS MILLERSVILLE 9-4,6-4; REMAIN TIED FOR FIRST IN PSAC EAST

MILLERSVILLE- Mansfield University baseball team defeated Millersville University 9-4,6-4 behind strong pitching performances by John Cronin (Horseheads,N.Y./Horseheads) and Kane Stein (N.Huntington/Norwin) Saturday afternoon at Millersville University to remain tied in first place in the PSAC East with Kutztown University.

In the opening game Mansfield jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Josh Rearick (Elton/Forest Hills) scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Brokaw (Altoona/Altoona)

However, Millersville responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 2-1 advantage.

In the top of the fourth inning Mansfield scored seven runs.  With the bases loaded, Brokaw doubled to right-center field scoring all three runners on base recording three of his five RBIs of the game.  Brokaw went 2-3 with a double and a triple.

Mansfield would add another run in the top half of the fifth when Brokaw drove in David Meldrum (Venetia/Peters Township) off a triple to right field.

Cronin went 5 1/3 innings giving up just four runs while scattering nine hits and striking out seven batters for his fifth win of the season.

In the nightcap Mansfield jumped out early again scoring four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.  With the bases loaded D.J. Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg Area) doubled to left-center field scoring all three runners on base.

Stein went 5 1/3 innings giving up three runs on four hits while striking out four batters recording his third victory of the season.  Marty Rakaczewski (Wilkes-Barre/Hanover Area) came in to close out the game for his ninth save of the season tying the school record for most saves in a season.  He also ties Chris McGee for the most games pitched in a season with 23 appearances so far this season.

Mansfield improves to 24-16 overall and 12-4 in the PSAC tied with Kutztown for first place in the PSAC East.  The Mountaineers next game is 1 p.m. Monday when they play host to Slippery Rock University.
