FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Ryan Wyland and Nicole Dann Named MU Spring Athletes of the Year

MANSFIELD – Mountaineer senior standouts Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock) and Nicole Dann (Lucan, Ontario/Medway) have been named the 2007 Mansfield University spring Athletes of the Year.

Wyland, the PSAC East Player of the Year in baseball this season, has been adding awards to his repertoire since the season ended back in May.

The all-around star was named to the first team All-PSAC East squad as a pitcher and the second team as an outfielder this season.

Wyland next earned the ABCA/Rawlings first team All-Region honor as an outfielder.

From the leadoff spot, he excelled at the plate ranking second among full-time starters on the team with a .331 average and 24 RBI in 38 games played and led all Mountaineers with 47 hits, 71 total bases, 17 extra-base hits and went 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts.

On the mound this season he made nine appearances with seven starts and six complete games.  He registered a 6-2 record with a 3.40 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 50.1 innings.

Wyland has high hopes for the 2007 MLB Player Draft which will take place this Thursday.

Dann became the fifth athlete under head coach Mike Rohl to compete in the outdoor track and field National Championships when she traveled to Charlotte this spring to run the 1500.

Dann broke her own records in the 800 and 1500 this season and she leaves Mansfield with every middle distance record but one, as she owns the 800, 1000, and mile records indoor and the 800 and 1500 records outdoor. She is also a part of both the indoor and outdoor 3200 relay records. Charity Learn holds the indoor 1500 record, the only middle distance mark Dann has not broken.

The four-time MU Presidential and PSAC Scholar Athlete was a finalist for the Outstanding Senior award at commencement.

Both Wyland and Dann have received degrees from Mansfield. Wyland will look to play baseball at the professional level while Dann will continue work on her Masters degree.
